TURP or Trans-Urethral Resection of the Prostate has been the mainstay surgical treatment for BPH for many decades. This treatment involves the resection of tissue using an electrosurgical loop. This can be thought of as a hot wire that cuts through tissue while cauterizing the blood vessels. It is a fast and effective treatment in terms of eliminating the symptoms of BPH, but it is more invasive than many of the newer treatments and comes with a higher complication rate and a generally longer recovery period than many of the less-invasive alternatives. TURP procedures are performed in the hospital and generally require a stay of a day or two in the hospital post-operatively. The TURP has been considered the “Gold-Standard” against which all the newer, and less invasive procedures have been judged.
